Backups

What a backup includes, where to keep it, how to set up automatic backups and encryption, and how to restore the PBX from a backup.

For PBX version 0.3 (alpha)

Backups are in “System” → “Backups”. Only the administrator sees this page.

What a backup includes

“Settings” are always included. You can also add “Call history”, “Call recordings”, “Sounds”, “Certificates and keys” and the server settings that SAMPBX made.

After it is made, every backup is read again and compared — the list shows whether it passed the check.

Where to keep backups

In “Where to keep them”, choose a place: “Server disk”, “Network folder” (SMB), “SFTP” or “S3 storage”. The “Check the connection” button checks that the PBX can write there.

A backup on the server’s own disk will not help if that disk fails. Keep backups in a network folder, on SFTP or in S3.

Automatic backups

On a new PBX, automatic backups are already on: every day at 03:00 to the server disk, and the last 7 are kept. Adjust them to your needs in “Automatic backups”:

  • “How often” — every day or once a week, and the time;
  • how many of the last backups to keep;
  • “Besides the settings” — what else goes into a backup.

Encryption

Turn on “Encrypt with a password” and set the “Backups’ password” — at least 8 characters. Without this password, a backup cannot be restored: keep it separately from the server, together with the administrator’s password.

Manual backup

In “Make a backup now”, click “Make a backup”. Make a backup before big changes to the settings.

You can download a backup from the “Backups” list and upload it back with the “Upload a backup file” button. The “Find backups at the storage” button shows the backups that are already in the chosen place.

Restore

  1. In the “Backups” list, click “Restore” next to the backup you need.
  2. If the backup is encrypted, enter the “Backup password” and click “Read the backup”.
  3. Look at “What will change”.
  4. In “Also restore”, tick whether to bring back the call history, the call recordings and the server’s network.
  5. Click “Restore” and confirm.

Before a restore, the PBX itself makes a backup of its current state. During the restore, the PBX restarts: current calls are cut off, and phones connect again in about 30 seconds.

Firewall rules from the backup start working after they are applied in “Security”.
